Emma found her thumb!

Emma found her thumb this evening! She lost her pacifier and was trying to suck at her hands. She's been trying to suck on her hands since she's been born... usually she'll get a knuckle of her fist or her pointer finger in her mouth for 2 seconds before she gives up but tonight, she actually found her thumb and sucked on it for about 10 seconds! Unfortunately, Daddy wasn't in the room and I wasn't able to get any pictures of the event. We're excited that perhaps self-pacification is in the near future.

Where has the past month gone?

Emma is 4 weeks old today! It's crazy how quickly the past month has flown by! We're trying to treasure every day with her because they seem to go by way too fast. Emma continues to change daily, physically, her eyes are not the steely newborn blue anymore, they're getting lighter blue. She's getting stronger and enjoying tummy time. She likes morning tummy time on Daddy's chest a lot! Wednesday, Emma actively paid attention to the mobile above her swing for the first time this afternoon. Granted it wasn't for very long, but it confirms that she is seeing farther and paying more attention to her surroundings. She also smiled several wonderful smiles for Mommy Wednesday afternoon and a few more for Daddy on Thursday morning...the jury's still out on whether or not they were "gas smiles." We think they're getting to be closer to the real thing though!

Sunday was Kurt's first Father's Day. We had a great morning of family play time and Emma gave Daddy a card letting him know what a great job he has been doing for the past 3 weeks. She also had a special outfit picked out for the day. :) That afternoon, Kate and Shaun brought their daughter Morgan over so the girls could meet before they move back to the U.S. next week. Since, Morgan is 6 months old, Emma is looking forward to learning a lot from her!

On Tuesday, our midwife said that Carrie is healing well enough and gave the ok to go ahead and start walking for as long as she wants.Yay! That afternoon, Emma dozed in the stroller while Mommy walked a 45 minute loop near the house.

On Wednesday, we introduced Emma to many of our coworkers at lunch. Luckily, it was nice out and we were able to stand under a tree and catch up with friends before grabbing lunch at the canteen. It was wonderful to see people and have a nice leisurely lunch. Although we believe that Emma is an angel, we must give kudos to her car seat, which makes her feel all nice and cozy and puts her to sleep for hours! Afterward, Kurt had to go to work :( but Carrie and Emma visited with Calvin and his family for a bit. Grandma Marx cuddled Emma the whole time, giving Carrie's arms a rest for a while ;)

This past week has been nice and sunny and relatively warm which gives Emma the chance to wear some of the fun sunsuits and sundresses in her wardrobe. So cute to see her little feet and pudgy little baby legs!

It's Emma's 3-week Birthday!

Emma is 3 weeks old today! It's hard to believe...it seems like she's been here forever, but at the same time that time is flying by! Every morning we wake up and she looks older to us. The past few days she seems more alert and is more inquisitive about the world around her. She seems to be able to see a bit farther and appears to focus on objects better. We also think that she recognizes our voices. The other day, Kurt was holding her and she turned her head toward Carrie when she was talking. Emma has been a champ at tummy time, sometimes likes her swing, and is still working on paying attention to story time (Daddy's story time is about computer coding, and that puts her to sleep!). Earlier this week, we found out that Emma doesn't really like it when Mommy eats broccoli or hot wings. For the most part, she's still pretty laid back, although her witching hour seems to be around her 7ish feeding time...but she's so cute, we really can't complain too much ;)

On Tuesday, we started the process to get Emma her passport so she can come home with us early next year. Unfortunately, the photo place on post went out of business so the easy way to get a 2X2 inch picture was out. We did find one of those photo booths like they have in the mall where you can take funny pictures of yourself which said that it took official passport photos. It was quite an adventure to get her picture...it involved Kurt sitting on the floor of the booth and holding Emma up to the camera. Luckily, she was awake and was a great sport. She was able to hold her head up for two takes and was kind of looking in the general direction of the camera. We were ecstatic when the clerk processing the paperwork said that the pictures were good enough!

Emma had a well-check today and of course she passed with flying colors! She had her kidneys and heart checked via ultrasound. Her kidneys are both the correct size and are functioning correctly...thank goodness, otherwise we would have had to collect urine samples from her! And her heart is normal as well and doesn't have any murmurs (apparently 5% of the population has a murmur or a hole in their heart!). She was also weighed...our "little" girl is now 4500g (9lbs 14oz)! This was also Carrie and Emma's first time out alone together. Emma was a little angel and slept the whole time...both girls were so happy that everything went smoothly!

Tummy time earlier this week:

Although her eyes can still change, we think they're going to stay blue

Emma also had her first date earlier this week. She shared a crib with Calvin, our friends' Melanie and Adam's little boy who was born on June 9.

New Picture Link

We have really enjoyed being parents for the past week and a half. Emma continues to be amazing. We love just cuddling and looking at her and are continually amazed at how precious she is. While we've had a few rough patches, she seems to be relatively laid back...we thank her for this daily.

Highlights and lessons we've learned this past week include:
-her umbilical cord fell off on Wednesday 3 June while we were still in the hospital
-she had her first pediatrician appointment on Saturday 6 June. The Doctor told us that she has started gaining weight already
-our midwife helped give her her first bath in the tub on Monday 8 June
-Emma wakes up slow...which gives us a chance to get to her before she cries
-Emma HATES diaper changes; she also seems to wait until we're in the middle of a diaper change to complete her business. *sigh*
-Emma rolls onto her side while sleeping
-Emma pulls the covers over her head, scaring her Mommy half to death!

Since our last photo link was getting pretty full, we created a new one.

Introducing Emma Grace

Emma Grace joined us on 29 May 2009 at 6:52pm. She was 4,000 grams (8.8lbs) and 57 cm (22.4 inches). She is a very healthy little girl and passed all of her tests and screenings with flying colors.

We were in the hospital for a week and just got home on Thursday. We are still settling in but will post more pictures soon.

Thanks to all of our Family and Friends for all your well wishes!
