Growing like a weed

Mia rocked a 6 month romper tonight and put away a 0-3 month one which was too small in the feet and too short in the body/legs!

Will update with a picture tomorrow!

Random notes about Mia's pregnancy

I fell off the blogging wagon for quite a while. Since last summer. We had a very busy but fun summer last year...we traveled the majority of the weekends. Originally, I had hoped to catch up on posts, I really can't promise that that will happen now. One thing I use as an excuse is pregnancy. I was extremely exhausted!

Before I forget, I wanted to write a bit about my pregnancy with Mia. (If I think of anything else after I post, I'll be sure to update this post!)

I am a very lucky lady and have easy pregnancies compared to many people. Like I mentioned above, I was very tired, especially during the first trimester with Mia. Fortunately, I didn't have any morning sickness. Sure there were days were I felt off, but it wasn't much to complain about. The biggest thing for me during this pregnancy was that Mia sat SO much lower than Emma did which caused me a fair amount of discomfort and pain during the 3-5 month range. I also had a lot of back pain especially towards the end of the pregnancy. Although I had some issues sleeping when I was pregnant with Emma, I spent a lot more time awake during the night, not quite insomnia but close, with Mia. It was hard for me to catch up on sleep and rest during this pregnancy, although Kurt tried to entertain Emma whenever she would let him so that I could relax and lay down. All that complaining aside, I had a good pregnancy.

Notes:

I failed the first glucose test and had to go for the long test which followed three painful days of a special diet that I had to stuff myself with complex carbs to ensure they were correctly being broken down. Luckily, I did not end up having gestational diabetes!

Kurt accompanied me to most of the appointments. He skipped a few because, I was in and out in 5 minutes for most of them. He was there for the 'important' ones. The initial ones confirming the pregnancy and the 20 week ultrasound where we found out that Mia was a girl.

With Emma we knew that her name would be Emma right away. We had decided on a boy and girl name before we were even married. With Mia, it took a bit longer. Several of the names we liked previously, we decided we didn't like anymore due to recent pop culture. Kurt liked Mia the whole time; it took me a couple more days to decide I liked it. We decided that Katherine sounded pretty with it. I didn't mind if it was spelled with a C or a K; Kurt was partial to K. :)

All in all:

With Emma, I loved being pregnant and although I was ready to meet her, I didn't mind that she was 2 days late. With Mia, I would say that I liked being pregnant and that I was ready for her to come out at least 2 weeks before her due date!

Parent Teacher Conference

On 21 May, I had a parent teacher conference with Emma's primary teacher, Ms. Brianna. She started the meeting by saying, "Emma pretty much has been three for about 6 months." She gave me the Milestone Moments paper with check marks in the Learned category for all the criteria/indicators. The comments included:
-Emma is a very compassionate child. She loves to help her friends and if they are feeling down she likes to figure out the problem and solve it. (This makes my heart sing!)
-When Emma is working on something she concentrates and is very persistent with making sure a puzzle piece fits or a button is fastened, etc.
-Emma has learned more through language by conversation. I noticed her parents ask her questions instead of give her demands. that gives her room fro response and word expansion.

Some other things we talked about:
-Emma likes to climb and jump. Yep, keen observations skills there. :) Brianna said that Emma keeps up with or sometimes leads the boys!
-Emma has a very developed imagination for her age. Apparently, many kids don't develop imagination for a little while longer and with all the technology, some kids' imagination is even more stunted.
-Emma is a helper. Brianna said that she is amazed that Emma can zip up her own coat and is working on buttoning. Emma actually helps the other kids get dressed and undressed to go outside/come inside!
-Emma loves books, she will sit for 30 minutes and listen to story time.
-Emma has a rivalry with a boy, Payton, they always want to be the first to answer questions.
-Emma loves balancing and twirling around in a pirouette.
-Emma can string together many many large beads. The first time they were shown this, Emma did about 15 in one sitting.

Baby Stretches

I LOVE baby stretches! ...almost as much as I love baby snuggles!

Whenever I take Mia out of her car seat or she finishes a feeding, she arches her back, stretches her arms, and puts her head back to stretch. It is adorable!

I had forgotten that Emma used to do the same thing. I don't want to forget again how sweet they are, so I'm writing it down! :)

Memorial Day Weekend

This past weekend, we traveled to Kurt's parents. The ~2 hour car trip was Mia's first road trip! She did great and slept the whole way! When we first started out, she fussed a little, but Emma reassured her: "Mia it's all right. We'll be there soon." :) Mia got to meet most of her extended family on Kurt's side. She is young enough that she didn't mind being cuddled and passed around from one person to the next.

As always, Emma had a fantabulous time playing with her Grandma and Papa as well as Aunt Rachel and Uncle Johnny! Within 5 minutes of entering the house, Emma was seated at the kitchen table with the snack she apparently had been dreaming of on the trip up: cheerios with chocolate milk! She loved picking strawberries with Grandma in the garden and took Grandpa to see where the campfires are held. It was a hot weekend and Emma had fun playing in her kiddie pool and running under her new flower sprinkler! She ran around non-stop all weekend! If only we could channel her energy! Also, she was excited to sleep in the princess bed that Grandma made up for her!

While we were there, we celebrated her 3rd birthday with many family members including Carrie's parents who drove down for the day. Emma had a great time helping Grandma make her cake but was impatient that the decorating process took some time. She had a great time seeing everyone and running around all afternoon. She received many fun gifts, including a Strawberry Shortcake Bubble Tea set from Uncle Johnny, 2 swimsuits, pajamas, shorts, t-shirts, a dress, books, and gift cards for to pick dates with an adult of her choice, just to name a few!

Here are a couple pictures from the weekend:

Dear Emma

Dear Emma,

Today is your Third Birthday! I can't believe you are 3!!! You are getting so big!

All ready for school on her 3rd Birthday!
You slept in today after a long but fun weekend of playing hard at Grandma and Papa's. You were a very happy, well rested girl. You had apple cinnamon cheerios for breakfast and let me pick out one of your new outfits (from Grandma) for you to wear. Daddy took you and your cupcakes to school.

Today was a Tuesday so you had dance class and Miss Nicole gave you a rose for your birthday. We sent in chocolate cupcakes with pink icing and sprinkles (which you helped me put on this morning) for you and your class. Daddy picked you up today as well. You had some good and bad moments tonight but it was because you were tired. We had pizza for dinner and you asked for sparkling water. Afterwards you got to eat candy out of a Dora egg that your teachers gave you today.

You got lots of presents! Our neighbor Barb, gave you a doggy bubble machine. Gigi gave you a Gecko sprinkler and a fairy doll that you get to color. Calvin, Adam, & Melanie sent you a stamp set, stickers, and Hi Ho Cherry. Mommy and Daddy gave you a watch, Dora umbrella (you were very excited for both of these!), princess underwear, hair ties, dice, and a sticker book that Mommy made for you with princess stickers.

Opening presents after dinner!
Grammy and Grandpa called, but you didn't really want to talk to them. We did get you to tell them about your watch and umbrella. Uncle David called and you really didn't want to talk to him either...you did tell him you would save him a cupcake though. Grandma and Papa Campbell skyped with you and you talked to them a little bit.

We started asking you your Birthday questions. We haven't finished them yet, but I'll post them when we do.

At three years old: you are very independent and usually want to do everything yourself. (Unless you are tired, then you get whiny and claim you can't do anything yourself.)
You love your sister (who is 2 months old) very much and want to hug and kiss her all the time.
You try testing your bounds all the time and seem to enjoy talking back to us, especially Mommy.
You know your ABC's and can count to 16. We're working on getting to 20, but you make mistakes sometimes. You recognize numbers and letters and like pointing them out when we are driving.
You like reading us stories from your fairy tale book, the Grover book, and your new book from Aunt Rachel where YOU are the princess!
You are compassionate and help your friends at school when they are sad or hurt.
You love going to school and can't wait to go on Mondays.
Today was your first full day in the three-year old room.
You love being silly and getting tickled.
You like calling me, Mommy-boink. You picked this up from daycare a couple weeks ago.
You love having tea parties.
You are generally patient when it comes to Mia, but you have your moments.

I know there is a lot more. But that's what I can think of right now. :)

I love you so much! You make me so happy; even when you frustrate me! I hope you always know that. I love watching you grow. You are at a very fun age right now (we've said that at all your developmental stages, you just keep getting better and better!) and I know this upcoming year will be a lot of fun! I love watching you learn and figure things out. You are so inquisitive and it is fun to watch you be excited to learn new things and apply them.

Love,
Mommy

Mia's 2 Month Stats

Mia had her 2 month checkup today. She did great during the checkup and for her vaccinations.

She is 12 pounds 9.5 ounces (95th percentile) and 23 inches long (75th percentile). Her head circumference is 38.5 cm (50th percentile). Although foot size was not measured at the doctor, she must have big feet because they are outgrowing her 3 month rompers!

She received 3 vaccines, one in each leg and an oral one for rota virus. She sucked down the oral vaccine like it was candy -- likely it did have some sugar in it for kids to drink it. Her left leg is very sore, we can feel the muscle knotted up in it --poor baby! (I remember Emma having the same reaction.) She slept most of the afternoon, but we've had some rough patches this evening. She did have some happy time smiling and talking to Daddy during a diaper change though.

Other developments from the last week, on Wednesday, 23 May, her diaper rash that she had had for well over a month was finally healed!

Here she is before her appointment:

8 Weeks!

Only two big things to add since last week's 7 weeks post:

1. Mia slept through the night....twice! On Monday night Mia slept from 10:15 until about 3:45 and on Tuesday from about 9:30 until about 3:15. It is felt great to get such a large chunk of sleep! I woke up around 3:30 on Monday pretty uncomfortable and was actually relieved when she woke up 15 minutes later (probably because I checked on her!). On Tuesday, I woke up a few times uncomfortable and pumped after she ate at 3:30. Unfortunately, her streak did not continue on Wednesday night, but we were out shopping for most of the afternoon and she slept in her car seat all afternoon. As a result, she had to make up a couple feedings and we saw every hour last night.

2. Mia is getting really close to sitting up! She is gradually lifting more and more of her torso off her boppy or boppy lounger each day by herself. Today, I propped another little pillow behind her on the boppy and she sat there for quite a while  and was able to right herself if she leaned too far to one side or the other. Of course she gets worn out pretty quickly, but her endurance is getting better and better. As she gets stronger, she tolerates tummy time better. She had a great stretch today and paid attention to her new Crawl along Snail.  She even was able to push her self enough to roll over. I think this startled her a little bit, but she was pretty proud (or at least happy) to be on her back!

Follow-up Dentist Appointment

Emma had her follow up dentist appointment as well as her first cleaning on Wednesday. She did awesome, and told Kurt such on their way out of the appointment. :)

The dentist said that her bottom two teeth are no longer loose but are slightly discolored (neither of us noticed it) but that sometimes baby teeth will whiten back up over time. Huge relief to know she doesn't have any permanent damage!

During the appointment, she sat in the chair by herself while Kurt held her hand. She did great during the entire exam and cleaning. She was excited to receive a tiara as well as a glittery silver wand on her way out for being such a good patient.

On a side note, Mia is now covered in glitter because Emma has had such fun showing it to her and casting spells on her!

Talking and Understanding

Mia continues to talk and understand more and more. On Tuesday this week, she seemed to have a full conversation with both Gigi and Aunt Brenda! She talked to them for several minutes! Unfortunately, I did not get a video :( It was adorable! She is branching out from only talking while on the changing table.

Even when she was brand new, we had the sense that she knew the words eat and milk. She would be in the middle of a screaming fit and we would ask, "Mia are you hungry? Do you want to eat? Do you want milk?" and her cry would change to sort of a bark affirming that that was indeed what she wanted. A few weeks ago, if Kurt asked her a question about eating or wanting milk, she started to automatically turn in my direction.

Following Mia's last well check, we got her some Mylicon in hopes of helping her gassy tummy troubles. The first time she had it, we thought the different taste shocked her into quieting down, however, we've used it several times and each time, it has the same effect. Mia instantly calms and relaxes enough to fall asleep. Now, if we can get her attention during a crying session caused by gas, we ask if she wants medicine and sometimes receive either her 'yes' bark/cry or witness her looking for the bottle of gas drops.

Emma's iPhone

The back cover of a magazine is an ad for the iPhone4. When Emma saw it last week, she immediately picked it up and started using her index finger to 'slide' the screen. We were both amazed and amused as Emma continued to pretend to look at pictures. When we asked her where she learned it, she told us from Aunt Katie and Lehua and Uncle David who had visited us on separate occasions and showed her pictures on their 'smart' phones. (We live in the dark ages and have 'dumb' phones.) Emma has picked up the magazine several times to use her phone since she first saw the ad. I think I'm going to cut it out and glue it to cardboard so she can play with it for a while and not just until I recycle the magazine.

Waking up Slow!

Mia wakes up S-L-O-W! and she channels both birds and old men in the process. Mia starts waking up around 5am...with the birdies. She grunts and groans and stretches until she repositions herself into a more comfortable position where she rests for a minute or two then channels an old man and toots, loudly, then grunts and groans some more. This entire process is repeated for about 1.5 to two hours when she greets us with a smile (and a dirty diaper :) ).

Attitude

Emma has been FULL of attitude lately. Not just any attitude...I'm talking 13yearold attitude. It wears us out. Sometimes it's because she's tired, sometimes it's because she's jealous of Mia, sometimes it's just a 3 year old trying to figure out how to get her point across.

In the past, I've told her she should take her attitude back to whatever store she bought it from. That statement went over her head. Tonight, I asked where she got her attitude from. Her response (full of attitude, of course) was "From my mouth!" *sigh*

Mia at 7 weeks

Mia is 7 weeks old today! Crazy how time flies. The past week or week and a half, Mia seems to have developed in leaps and bounds.

In the past week, she has really started grabbing on to things. Mostly my shirt when she's nursing, her clothing when she's being changed, Kurt's shirt when she's laying on his chest, and my hair when it's down. She also appears to be attempting to grab her pacifier but hasn't succeeded yet.

She is talking more and more. Mostly when she's on the changing table. She will coo and give us some oohs and ahhs and even a goo if we're lucky. This morning she even 'talked' to Emma. :)

This past weekend, she really took notice of her mobile. In the past week or so she really paid attention to the ceiling fan in our bedroom during diaper changes. Prior to this, she might have glanced at it but it didn't hold her attention. Over the weekend, I put the mobile on in her crib and she was mesmerized the entire 20 minutes it stays on. I have turned it on for her before, but again it never held her attention. Now, she will watch it intently with her lips pursed like she's saying 'oohh' and kick and wave her arms. At one point, she watched it for 40 minutes while Emma and I watched her and talked to her.

She also LOVES to stand. If it were up to her, she would stand all day. Kurt keeps saying we need to get the jumperoo out, but she probably won't be able to see out of the seat! She likes to sit and look around as well. A while ago, I thought she would love the bumbo seat, but she's really more comfortable in our laps. She has started in the past day or two trying sit up on her own, i.e. lifting her head and shoulders up off the floor...and then crying when she can't get to sitting. She HATES tummy time. She tolerates it for about 3 minutes then screams her head off. One would think that she would like being able to see more things from that perspective...maybe in a few more weeks.

Mother's Day 2012

My Mother's Day celebration started on Friday!

Friday morning, I took Emma to daycare and stayed for a Mommy and Me craft and snack time. I dropped her off in her room then waited in the multipurpose room for the kids to come in. Emma was so excited to see me! We got to glue tissue paper in a flower arrangement together and eat muffins and coffee cake together. She also presented me with a flower pot that will grow a flower (if I remember to water it), and a "Why I love my Mom" book. She was very sad when it was time for me to leave and had to be distracted by a teacher.

The reasons in the Why I love my Mom book are:
- I pooped on the potty and my Mommy give me Tinkerbell fruit snacks!
- I love my Mommy cause she gave me pretzels!
- Me and Mommy play ball together!
- Me and Mommy eat chicken nuggets!
- Me and Mommy play games together!

I love that 3 of the 5 items are food related! :)

As mentioned in the previous post, Kurt and Emma had a Daddy-Daughter date on Friday night on which they bought me gorgeous pink and purple tulips!

Also, Emma, much like her Daddy, couldn't wait to give me her gift, and presented me with a painting of two girls walking hand in hand on a beach. It's really sweet and I can't wait to try to recreate it with our girls in the future! Apparently, Kurt told Emma that she could pick something out at Home Goods for me and this painting was it. Originally, she found a vase, but since we already have a bunch he talked her out of it. He attempted to steer her towards stationary and a decorative box, but she had already set her sights on this picture. :)

On Saturday, Kurt got up with Emma and let me stay in bed with Mia. Later in the morning, we had a lot of fun going to our community's street fest. We had some lunch and then Emma got to go in a bounce house where she had a lot of fun jumping high and then bouncing on her bottom. We ended the morning there with some ice cream!

On Sunday, Kurt again got up with Emma letting me get some more rest with Mia and he and Emma made a breakfast run to Dunkin' Donuts. After I ate breakfast and drank coffee, they gave me a book and a coffee slidey shelf thingy. :) Emma was VERY excited to give me a card that she picked out herself. (Kurt also told her she could get 'whatever card she wanted.' :) It was a card with Belle on it that sings, Be our Guest. Kurt wrote in it for her: " I love you super!"

After that, we had a lazy morning and then hit up Flippin' Pizza for lunch followed by a some Costco shopping. That evening Kurt grilled for us. Due to lack of sleep, portions of the afternoon were a bit rough for us, but all in all, it was a wonderful weekend!

Alice who?

On Friday evening, I met up with a friend for a walk. As I was getting myself and Mia ready, Emma asked what I was doing. I told her I was going for a walk with Allison. Although she wanted to go with me, Emma didn't really give me a hard time and had a Daddy-Daughter date instead. When we all returned home, Emma again asked who I met up with. When I responded, Allison, Emma asked, "Mommy, you met Alice in Wonderland?" :)

Emma's first haircut

Emma had her first haircut today! Well, truth be told, Grandma trimmed it over New Year's weekend but today was her first real hair cut. Some of the pieces she had cut off were 3 inches long!

Emma did great. Kurt showed her other people getting their hair cut and read her stories while we waited for our turn. Emma asked Kurt to sit with her in the chair and then sat still and moved her head for the hair stylist. As a reward, she received a lollipop, which made her day.

Here are some before and after shots:

Emma's first trip to the dentist

Last Sunday, 29 April, while Emma was playing,  she fell and hit her mouth on the handle of our wagon. There was blood. Kurt played doctor and looked over Emma and saw that she hit her bottom front teeth and that her gums were bleeding. It stopped pretty quickly, but Emma's mouth was sore several hours later. So that, in addition to Carrie reading worst case scenarios online led to Emma going to see the dentist on Monday.

Kurt took her to the family dentist, but since she is so small they referred her to a pediatric dentist later that afternoon. The pediatric dentist said that her teeth are a little loose (we didn't think they were) but since they are baby teeth there isn't much to do, except baby them and be careful. So after making an appointment for the end of May to follow up and get her first cleaning, Emma was back at home to show me all the loot she scored while at the dentist!

Kurt said Emma was awesome all day. She was very brave and sat very still at both appointments and during the xrays. During the first appointment, after the dentist examined her, Emma all of a sudden got very overwhelmed with the situation and looked up at Kurt and needed a hug and planted a huge kiss on him telling him that she loved him.

All week long, Emma has been awesome at not biting with her front teeth. Occasionally she has to be reminded to get her fingers out of her mouth. She has also done a good job of reminding her teachers to cut up her food into bite sized pieces so she doesn't have to bite with her front teeth.

We (read: Carrie) probably over reacted to the situation. Kids probably do this all the time and don't go to the dentist. But we felt much better about everything after we had her looked at.

Of course, on the way home from the second appointment, Emma was treated to some ice cream. She picked out rainbow sherbet. :)

Attitude

We swear that Emma is 2 going on 12. Some of the things she comes out with make it very hard to keep a straight face! Some recent Emma-isms are:
- When asked to do something her reply is: ok, Ok, OK!
- When she doesn't want to do something she will ask why. When we respond, Because I said so. She responds, But I don't want to!
-When she gets exasperated, she exclaims, GOSH!

Not really an Emma-ism, but we had guacamole at dinner tonight. She had a hard time pronouncing it. First it sounded like macaroni, then rock-a-rolly, then the closest she got was wokamole. Apparently the Mexican dip has become an Asian one! :)

Big Sister

Emma loves being a big sister! She dotes on Mia constantly. She loves giving her hugs and kisses, looking at her toes, getting her to hold her finger, and showing her toys. If Emma had her way, she would kiss her all the time. This mentality often gets her in trouble, since Mia doesn't always appreciate having Emma's cute face in hers!

I can only remember one time that Emma has had a breakdown because of Mia. I think Emma wanted a snack and I told her she would have to wait until I was finished feeding Mia. Emma's response was that Mia needed to get back in my belly.

She has been very patient whenever I am feeding Mia and initially was very curious about it. We explained that Mommies feed babies milk from their boobies. Now, she will tell me, I think Mia needs to eat from that side and point to a side.

Last weekend, friends who have a daughter 4 months older than Mia were visiting. They were feeding the baby with a bottle. Emma asked our friend, "Do you have boobies?" rationalizing that she must not have boobies if she was using a bottle to feed the baby. Luckily they also have a son 3 months older than Emma and are used to random questions like that!

Since Mia is still in our bedroom, I get to her pretty quickly at night when she starts to fuss. Of course there have been a few times she's been loud. Luckily, Emma has remained in her room and just rolled over and went back to sleep. She does comment in the morning though if Mia woke her up.

1 month already!

It's hard to believe that Mia is already 1 month old!

At her check up, she weighed in at 10 lbs 12oz and 22.5 inches long. Both these measurements put her in the 95th percentile. Her head measurement was 37cm which is the 50th percentile.

She has started to give us genuine smiles that absolutely melt our hearts! She even giggled for Daddy last week! (She has giggled in her sleep while sleeping on Mommy's chest before too.)

She is holding her head up quite well and loves to look around the room. The pediatrician remarked that she physically, she is more like a 2 month old. Several times in the last week, she let us know that she preferred to be in a sitting position to laying down. We brought out the bumbo seat and she has enjoyed sitting in it several times. She can't sit in it for long periods because she can't hold her head up that well yet but she does manage a few minute stints at a time. She tracks toys 180 degrees when we're playing and will track Mommy when I leave the room and am talking. She does much better at tummy time than Emma did and loves scooching across a blanket and seems to attempt to roll over. (She rolled over 2 times the first week of May, but it was more the position that I put her down in than her actually rolling over.)

Since she was born, she routinely, clasps her hands together and frequently attempts to suck on her fingers. Her movements are getting more fluid, but her hands still jerk out of her mouth pretty quickly. When she was first born she would not have anything to do with a pacifier. Unfortunately, she had an intense need to suck which resulted in us using our pinkie fingers as pacifiers for several hours a day. She started to take a pacifier on April 24th when she had a very painful diaper rash.

During the first week of May, we noticed that her eyes started to change color from the newborn steely blue to a bluer blue similar to Emma's.

She is still waking about every 2-3 hours during the night and still isn't sleeping by herself and prefers to bury her head in the crook of our arm similar to an ostrich hiding.   When we do lay her down, her preferred spot is in the bouncer in a bathroom with a fan on. Generous friends gave us a sound machine which has helped her at night as well.

This kid goes through a gabillion diapers. (Ok, slight exaggeration, but only a little) Like all babies, she has gas and poops. A lot. Literally, some days we were going through about 3 to 4 diapers an hour. Whenever she gets angry and cries, she poops. If she sneezes, she poops. If her tummy rumbles, she poops.  Also, the poor girl gets so uncomfortable some times with gas it breaks our hearts.

Mia had her first sick appointment on April 25th for a very severe diaper rash. A combination of very sensitive skin and her an active digestive system resulted in a bad rash that wouldn't heal. After about a week of prescription ointment and using cotton balls and water during changes, we started to see improvement and Mia is much happier during diaper changes.

Emma loves to give Mia hugs and kisses. We're not sure if Mia appreciates them as much as Emma loves giving them! Several times, though, Emma has been able to quiet Mia down during diaper changes or if one of us is busy cooking dinner. We're sure that Mia will come to love hanging out with her sister as she gets older.

Although Mia can go from calm to ANGRY in about 2.5 seconds, she generally is much easier to calm than Emma ever was. I can hold her close and tell her softly that Mama has her and she quiets down pretty easily. (Unless it's gas related, which is a whole other ballgame)

We both remarked earlier this week that Mia seemed older. She is definitely more aware of her surroundings and has even begun making baby sounds while we're changing her. This just started in the past day or two and was most prominent today. (5 May)
