Last Sunday, 29 April, while Emma was playing, she fell and hit her mouth on the handle of our wagon. There was blood. Kurt played doctor and looked over Emma and saw that she hit her bottom front teeth and that her gums were bleeding. It stopped pretty quickly, but Emma's mouth was sore several hours later. So that, in addition to Carrie reading worst case scenarios online led to Emma going to see the dentist on Monday.
Kurt took her to the family dentist, but since she is so small they referred her to a pediatric dentist later that afternoon. The pediatric dentist said that her teeth are a little loose (we didn't think they were) but since they are baby teeth there isn't much to do, except baby them and be careful. So after making an appointment for the end of May to follow up and get her first cleaning, Emma was back at home to show me all the loot she scored while at the dentist!
Kurt said Emma was awesome all day. She was very brave and sat very still at both appointments and during the xrays. During the first appointment, after the dentist examined her, Emma all of a sudden got very overwhelmed with the situation and looked up at Kurt and needed a hug and planted a huge kiss on him telling him that she loved him.
All week long, Emma has been awesome at not biting with her front teeth. Occasionally she has to be reminded to get her fingers out of her mouth. She has also done a good job of reminding her teachers to cut up her food into bite sized pieces so she doesn't have to bite with her front teeth.
We (read: Carrie) probably over reacted to the situation. Kids probably do this all the time and don't go to the dentist. But we felt much better about everything after we had her looked at.
Of course, on the way home from the second appointment, Emma was treated to some ice cream. She picked out rainbow sherbet. :)
