Diaper rash, Mom, & Standing

Emma went to see the doctor for a non-well-visit for the first time today. For about a week now, she's been battling a diaper rash that just kept getting worse. Our poor little girl started crying practically when we mentioned the phrase 'diaper change.' The doctor prescribed an anti-fungal cream along with neosporin and diaper cream early this morning. Luckily, her skin is clearing up already. Hopefully by this weekend her bottom will be smooth and soft again!

Kurt stayed at home with Emma today after her appointment. He said that she said "Mom" all day long. When I walked in, she gave me the biggest smile and said Mom again. Too cute!

Also, this evening, I saw Emma put her hands on the floor and push herself up to standing for the first time. Kurt saw her do it on Sunday afternoon for the first time and has seen it a couple more times this week. We're really going to have to try to get her little butt scoot on video soon before she stops doing it for good!

This weekend

Quick post of Emma's firsts for the past few days.

Yesterday, Emma climbed a small step for the first time (with Daddy holding her hand) at her new friend Claire's house.

Today, she went from her back, to her tummy, to sitting. This might not seem huge, but for Emma, who detests the thought of being on her tummy, it was ginormous! She also went from sitting to standing with out the use of furniture or another person for help. Still no crawling... she just scoots on her bottom! That will probably end soon once she gets standing on her own down pat.

Emma has been getting more and more confident walking and is starting to progress to running. She rarely cries when she falls down; instead she just figures out a way to stand back up and get to where ever it was that she was going. She did a great job keeping up with her new friend Cameron who is 15 months old.

We discovered this morning that Emma has 2 top teeth! We thought they might be coming since she has had her fingers in her mouth a lot for the past few days, but she wasn't very fussy at all and we really hadn't been checking. This morning, I had her giggling and was able to look in her mouth and saw that the left top tooth was completely through and could see the white of the right top tooth.

Friends

Emma has been doing very well at daycare. Her caregivers consistently tell us that she is a very pleasant, social, and happy baby which, of course, makes us very happy. What makes us even happier though, is that Emma seems excited to arrive at daycare each day. Not only does she not cry when Kurt drops her off in the morning, she is content to play with toys, and yesterday, she was excited when she saw that they arrived at her room! When Kurt set her down, a little boy came up to say good morning to her and she let out a little squeal when she saw him. Her caregiver said that they play well together frequently...perhaps, Emma has a little boyfriend! (Calvin better call for a date soon!) =)

Words

Emma has been babbling up a storm lately and every once in a while will get a word out. A couple weeks ago, she clearly said Mama while I was cleaning up after dinner. I quickly spun around since she said it without prompting and I was completely surprised. She smiled sweetly at me like she'd been saying it forever. She also says Dada very frequently. So far though, she doesn't use either word to get our attention.

On Tuesday evening, Emma was walking around holding a little rubber duck. I said, "Emma, that is your ducky. Ducky, Ducky, Ducky." She responded, "Ducky." So far, no luck in getting her to say it again.

This evening, Emma walked over to her books and started looking at one. From across the room, I asked her if it was her "Baby Color" book. She clearly said "Baby" back to me.

It's so much fun watching her grow and learn. We swear we can see the wheels turning in her head sometimes trying to figure something out!

Emma meets her Great Great Grandma

This is a very belated post...sorry Gigi and thanks for the reminder about it!!!

On January 27th, Emma met her Great Great Grandma -- Gigi -- for the first time. Emma gave her big smiles and sat in her lap for a few minutes before getting right down to business and showing what a big girl she is by walking around the house. Emma had a great time playing with toys that Gigi set out for her to find. She also had fun meeting and playing with her Great Aunt Trish. Emma showed them that she remembered how to open gifts and had fun opening belated Christmas gifts.

We're fortunate that Gigi is only about 30 minutes from us and look forward to seeing her again soon.

Here are a few pictures from the day:

Daycare

Since daycare waiting lists are months long, we knew we couldn't wait to find somewhere that we liked that would have an opening within a month of us arriving in Maryland. Luckily, a friend in Germany highly recommended the daycare her son went to and we were able to reserve a spot for Emma a few months before we returned home.

We visited the daycare for a tour in January and were really impressed with the facility and the staff. Emma will get her own learning plan and we will be updated with her progress monthly. During the visit, Emma was excited to see other kiddos and new toys. We let Emma play with the kids in the room she would be in when she started while we checked out the room next door. We were really impressed that Emma let us walk into the next room since she has been very clingy lately. We hoped that this was a sign that she would like daycare and look forward to it. We watched as she and a little boy passed a toy back and forth a few times before Emma knocked him over while using him to try to stand up. *sigh* We just know that Emma is going to be the cause of many incident reports.

Last week, Emma (or maybe Mommy) had a trial week at daycare. Emma went for 5-6 hours 4 days. She did really well and only cried 2 days when we dropped her off. The other days, she was playing and didn't seem to notice when we left. The staff said she did really well and had a lot of fun. So far, the biggest hiccup is that she won't take a bottle from anyone there. As a result, we've just started to send more food with her so that she's not hungry.

Yesterday was Emma's first full day at "school." Unfortunately, she didn't sleep well the night before, so she was cranky and fussy during the day. The staff said she did well though. Once we got her home, she was so happy and excited to be with us that she just played and talked and ran around. She was so cute! It was amazing how quickly the evening went by. Before we knew it, we were in the midst of bath time and then getting ready for Tuesday.

Ironically, of the 6 days that Emma has been in daycare, she has only greeted us with a smile one time when we picked her up. Each time she saw us the other 5 days, she immediately broke out in tears. Poor girl. Hopefully, she'll realize soon that we'll always come back for her!

Emma did better today after a good night's sleep. Additionally, the director told me that Emma will graduate to the next room on Monday. The "First Steps" room seems to be better suited for her since she's so mobile even though she's a bit younger than the other kids. We're really excited about this since we didn't think the infant room gave her enough to do since she's used to walking around so much.

Tomorrow, Tomorrow, I love ya, Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is a VERY exciting day! We've been waiting for tomorrow for a while now. Tomorrow will make our move back to the States complete. Tomorrow will be exhausting, but completely worth it. Tomorrow, our household goods will be delivered!!

It has been almost exactly 2 months since the movers came and packed everything up. We're looking forward to couches and beds the most. Luckily, we've had camping chairs and an air bed and pack & play so we haven't been completely on the floor for the past 1.5 months, but we're looking forward to being able to sink into a couch after a long day and curl up with a blanket on a comfortable bed each night. Emma is also looking forward to the toys that didn't get shipped home early...it's going to be like Christmas all over again!

Tomorrow, Tomorrow, you're only a day away!!!
